Privacy policy
Effective September 13, 2026. Applies to the Schoolhouse app for iPhone and iPad and to this website, both made by Illuminant Inc. ("we").
The short version. We do not collect your data. Schoolhouse has no accounts and no servers of ours. What you enter stays on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud account, which we cannot read. The App Store privacy label for Schoolhouse is "Data Not Collected".
1. What the app stores, and where
Schoolhouse stores what you enter: your family's name, the names and grades of your students, your school year and courses, daily check-offs, notes, photos of work, books, assessments, activities, and the details you choose to print on reports (parent names, address, phone, email, school district, program, evaluator). All of it is kept in the app's database on your device.
If your device is signed into iCloud with iCloud Drive turned on, the same database is synchronized through Apple's CloudKit service to your other devices signed into the same Apple Account. That copy lives in your private iCloud database. Apple hosts it under Apple's own privacy terms; we have no access to it, no key to it, and no way to see it.
2. What we collect
Nothing. The app does not send us your data, does not create an account, does not assign you an identifier, and contains no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting software from us or from anyone else. We do not know who uses Schoolhouse.
3. Information that leaves your device, and why
- iCloud sync (optional, controlled by you in iOS Settings): your records go to your own iCloud, as described above.
- Book lookups: when you scan a book's barcode or tap "Look up" in the reading log, the app sends that ISBN to Open Library (openlibrary.org, run by the Internet Archive) to fetch the title, author, and cover. The request carries the ISBN and your device's network address, no name and no account. Nothing is sent unless you ask.
- Purchases: subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are handled by Apple's App Store. We receive from Apple only whether the app is entitled to Pro, never your name, payment details, or Apple Account.
- Sharing and printing: a report PDF or a backup file leaves the device only when you share, save, or print it, to the destination you choose.
- Send diagnostics: if you choose Settings › Send diagnostics, the app prepares a short text report (app version, device model, iOS version, storage mode, plan status, counts of records, recent log lines) with your family's, parents', and students' names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers removed, shows it to you, and opens Mail addressed to us. It is sent only if you tap Send. We keep such emails only as long as needed to help you.
- Crash reports: if you have opted into sharing analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may send us anonymized crash logs through Apple's own system. These contain no records of yours.
4. Children
Schoolhouse is made for parents and is not directed at children. Student mode shows a child their own checklist and collects nothing from them. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.
5. On-device intelligence, camera, and photos
Text recognition of scanned pages and the optional Apple Intelligence cleanup run entirely on your device with Apple's frameworks; no page image or text is sent anywhere. The camera and photo library are used only when you scan pages or attach photos of work, with your permission, and the images are stored in your records like everything else.
6. Your choices and rights
- Export everything at any time as one JSON file (Settings › Back up and restore), on any plan.
- Delete everything with Settings › Delete all data, and remove the iCloud copy under iOS Settings › Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Storage.
- Turn off sync by turning off iCloud Drive for Schoolhouse in iOS Settings.
- Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct, or delete on request; the controls above are complete and immediate. Residents of any jurisdiction with data-protection rights (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and others) may still write to us with questions.
7. This website
This site is static pages served by a hosting provider. We set no cookies and run no analytics or tracking scripts. The hosting provider may keep standard server logs (network address, page requested, time) for security and operation, under its own policy.
8. Changes
If Schoolhouse ever adds a feature that sends information to us, for example optional, anonymous usage counts, this policy will say so in plain language before that version ships, the App Store label will change accordingly, and the feature will be off by default.
